The survey at the beginning shows Rolex as most peoples favorite. Wow, are they fooled.

I’m a proud owner of all of the 3 watches. Purchased the omega in 1981 for my father 50 bday, now I have the honor to carry on the legacy, purchased the Rolex in 1990 as my first watch and the Santos 3 years ago, love them all.

Cartier watch in your image is being worn upside down for some reason
100% correct..owned a santos for 6 months, sold it as that bezel scratchs when you just look at it. $2,500 immediate loss.

Value retention…No way. Very difficult to sell a pre-owned Cartier unless you cheap sell it. Look at the regular sites and you’ll see exactly what I mean…they’re stagnant. The same watchs just sitting for sale for months on end. Walk into a Cartier store and pick up a Santos, as soon as you walk out the door its depreciated 50%. Don’t get me wrong they truly are stunning pieces, but if you ever have to get out of one your going to take a proverbial bath.
More like 75% So what is the problem? Buy it used at that and you will never be unhappy. You will enjoy the watch and the price won’t go down from there. If you buy it new for the splendour of doing so, then just accept it and don’t think of reselling. That’s just what it is for most watches like cars. Its only the Rolex bubble of undersupply of steel models and sophisticated flippers that created the illusion that normal production watches should somehow increase in immediate value. The headline scarce pieces somehow kept in immaculate condition for decades (think rare steel complicated Pateks) is another market entirely and more a store of value and way of moving capital like fine art. A different market entirely.
Nice article. On the Speedmaster, that is a good choice for a great watch, but there are so many variations of the model. It would be helpful if Ms Bauer could identify which variations she thought would be the best ones on which to focus.
I own several time pieces and my main one for daily use ,casual or dress is the SS Cartier Santos large size ..only square watch I own but I love it ,the look of it is timeless and elegant and unmistakably recognizable by watch enthusiasts
Hi Stephen, thanks for sharing your experience with your Cartier!

You seem to overlook Jaeger LeCoultre every year, the older Master series particularly the Geographic and Reverso’s are absolute classics and beautifully made. Whilst Omega and Rolex are excellent watches, overproduction and over inflated prices will catch up with them!

He’s probably wearing his Tank watch on the other arm.
Sorry to say, all Cartier watches just don’t keep good value at all. Only a good piece of jewelry to wear.

I have not ever seen a Santos 50% if you let me know where please.

I love the Patek nautilis
I love an AP Royal Oak.
Looks like watches that we both can’t afford.
How can you love it if you can’t spell it?

Thank you for your comment, Gary, and for your recommendations
Cartier has simple, clear lines and numbers – with mechanical “Werk” or with turbullion by that is hihly the most elegant design watch.
