The sub that Sean Connery wore in the first three Bond films was the personal watch of longtime Bond producer Cubby Broccoli (whose daughter now produces the series). Apparently Cubby took his watch off just as cameras were to roll on the first movie, Dr No, and said “You need a real watch” as he took Connery’s Gruen from him. After three films using his own personal sub, Broccoli realized he should approach Rolex in one of the first examples of product placement. Rolex turned him down flat, wanting nothing to do with a “cheap spy film”. Cubby immediately approached Omega, Rolex’s biggest rival. They immediately saw the opportunity, and the true Bond watches have been Omegas ever since. Cubby swore no Rolex would ever appear in a Bond film. There have been other brands, of course, like Seiko. But Omegas will always be the most memorable Bond watches.
