The fact that the contribution of one’s wrist movement is so miniscule that the wearer could never notice it is what seems to make them wind “automatically”.
In terms of a true automatic watch, solar powered watches probably come closest, since all they require is a light source. However, they lack the charm of a classic, mechanical watch with its springs and gears.
