I have a Seiko automatic watch. If I take it off my wrist it will continue to “play” for about 4 hours. Shouldn’t it go for longer than that?
Is there an energy storage component inside that is ( perhaps) breaking down?
Can it be fixed🤔

Thanks Tim for helping me to dispel the worries my husband has with his brand new Frederique Constant watch. He believed fully automatic meant just that but your article has helped to clarify

Hi Yvonne, I’m glad my article could help you out. Sadly, even though the name suggests it, automatic watches don’t really do anything without some kinetic energy provided by a moving wrist. The fact that the contribution of one’s wrist movement is so miniscule that the wearer could never notice it is what seems to make them wind “automatically”.
In terms of a true automatic watch, solar powered watches probably come closest, since all they require is a light source. However, they lack the charm of a classic, mechanical watch with its springs and gears.
